Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipso I was able to find pictures of the Kramm baseball team.
And when I started talking to my neighbors... Because that's what you do, right?
You talk to somebody and they're like, "Well, have you talked to this person?"
So then you call them up and then they send you to somebody else, and it's kind of a chain.
But I kept hearing that there had been a murder at Kramm.
And so I kept kind of talking to people and kind of narrowed the window a little bit.
And then I started doing newspaper searches and just looking for the word Kramm.
And fortunately, it's kind of an odd spelling, right?
K-R-A-M-M.
- Yeah.
- So I was able to find a Rock Island paper that detailed a shooting at the town of Kramm.
It was after a baseball game.
People's tempers got a little heated.
Perhaps the outcome wasn't what they wanted.
And one of the miners was talking trash and got into a fight, and there was actually an off-duty Peoria County deputy who was there to keep order because the baseball games had just been so rough and tumble that they needed somebody there to kind of keep the peace.
So this deputy steps in and tries to break up the fight, and this miner punches him in the back of the head.
And so then chaos ensues, and the deputy pulled his firearm out and shot into the crowd and this miner was killed.
And so of course there was a riot and the deputy had to be spirited away to somewhere else.
But that story, nobody knew that story.
I mean, the neighbors remembered maybe there was a murder, but it just kind of made you think, in all these little communities and all these places, look at all these stories that are just fascinating that nobody knows.
- What haven't people heard about, yeah.
